Prabhupada's Palace of Gold, located near Wheeling, West Virginia, was built in the 1970s by Hare Krishnas as a memorial to the religious movement's founder, Srila Prabhupada. The 5,000 acre estate, nicknamed the American Taj Mahal, is open to visitors and the 100 residents (we saw only three on our September 2011 visit) are very laid-back and allow guests to wander without intrusions.
