The 120 year old Port Clinton Pier lighthouse was recently moved to a permanent home on the shores of Lake Erie. The 12,000 pound light was moved by barge (about half a mile down the Portage River), crane and truck...thanks to the Port Clinton Lighthouse Conservancy, a local group which raised the funds and handled the restoration (Rich Norgard...President). After about 6o years at the Brand marina, the Conservancy worked out a license agreement with the city to place the light on property leased from the State of Ohio...and the Conservancy will maintain the light at no expense to the city.
The light was on the Portage River from 1896 to 1952 when it was moved to the marina and scheduled for destruction. However, marina owner Dave Jeremy saved the light...and the rest, as they say, is history.
There is still more work to be done in the weeks ahead before the dedication in late September...steps will be constructed, landscaping (with rocks from a local quarry) will be completed, plus a Fresnel lens will be installed.
I will be returning ASAP to see...and photograph...the completed project...new photos will be added at that time.
These photos are from Monday, August 22, 2016.
I was accompanied on the trip by Lilla, our daughter-in-law; Iain, her brother; and, of course, my favorite photography companion, Monnie.
The Wilds is a private, non-profit safari park and conservation center located in Cumberland, Ohio. It includes 9, 154 acres of reclaimed coal mine land with 2,000 acres of pastures. It is the largest wildlife conservation center in North America.
Monnie and I visited The Wilds on Thursday, May 19, 2016 with daughter-in-law Lilla Ryan and her brother, Iain Frerichs. The weather was perfect...upper 60s and sunny...and the open-air Safari bus tour was perfect for taking lots of photos. This gallery includes many of those photos.
Now in its 22nd year, the Great Lakes Medieval Faire allows visitors to wander the streets of the 13th century village of Avaloch...and to mingle with its residents...including its royalty. Along the way, there is entertainment...and, of course, lots of food. (FYI: Avaloch is located on route 534 south of Geneva, Ohio. It is open on Saturdays and Sundays from mid-July to mid-August...doors open at 11 am...with a pre-opening gathering of "locals" and guests starting at 10:45.)
Mill Creek Park, located on the west side of Youngstown, Ohio, is the second largest metropolitan park in the United States. It was founded by Youngstown attorney Volney Rogers in 1891 and was officially opened in 1893. It contains approximately 2,600 acres, twenty miles of roads, fifteen miles of hiking trails, and three lakes as well as a variety of bridges, ponds, streams, gardens, waterfalls and two 18-hole golf courses.
